Why does rosaline not like romeo

They want to get married but they know that this will not be approved between their family feud. This is why they secretly ask Friar Laurence to marry them in secret. Forswear it, sight! This displays how blindly Romeo fell in love with Juliet—even knowing she was a Capulet. He only liked her for her appearance rather than truly getting to know her.

At the beginning of the book Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo decided to go to a Capulet 's party because he had seen that the girl he liked was on the guest list for the party. He was so in love with Rosaline but he knew she didn 't love him back so he then fell in love with Juliet. He forgets all about Rosaline and thinks Juliet is all he needs. From first sight Romeo wants to marry Juliet and he doesn 't even know her.

But, Juliet also wants to marry him when she first seen Romeo. Juliet is careful though, more than Romeo. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is spontaneous when it comes to making decisions and does not think them through. Is love at first sight? Is love based on looks? Falling in love at such young age really real ways to love at all? Common motifs of books show characters often falling in love at a young age. In Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean tragedy, it is proved that it is not.

In Romeo and Juliet they were not in love; Romeo was in love with another beautiful lady named Rosaline, and Juliet was just his rebound. Romeo was not aware of Juliet 's existence until he went to a party. Is Rosaline whom thou didst love so dear, so soon forsaken? This changed very quickly. Romeo was truly in love with Rosaline, not Juliet.

But, um, don't get excited, because we never see her, she has no speaking part, and she isn't even listed in the dramatis personae the cast list. So, why the heck are we talking about Rosaline in our "Character Analysis"?

Well, we may not hear directly from Rosaline or even see her unless we watch, say, Zeffirelli's film adaptation of the play , but we do hear a lot about her from one of the play's major characters, Romeo. According to Romeo, Rosaline is beautiful and completely unavailable—Romeo tells us she's sworn off boys by taking a vow of chastity 1.

In this way, she resembles the unattainable "Laura," a figure in Petrarch's popular 14th-century love poetry who never gives the poet Petrarch the time of day. Rosaline also seems to resemble the "Youth" in Shakespeare's Sonnets. In Sonnets , the Poet spends a lot of time trying to convince the Youth, a young man who refuses to marry and have children, that he should get hitched so he can "bless" the world with a bunch of gorgeous kids.

In Sonnet 4 , for example, Shakespeare writes that if the good looking young man dies without having any kids, his "unus'd beauty must be tomb'd with [him]. O, she is rich in beauty, only poor Tha, when she dies, with beauty dies her store. So, Rosaline is in some ways a stock character. Rather than stay with her, the Friar leaves the tomb and Juliet is left alone. Romeo opens the crypt and is shattered as he finds what he believes to be the corpse of his beloved. His final words, as he consumes a lethal drug, are as follows: Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide!

Later textual evidence does indicate that Paris harbors a legitimate love for Juliet, and though he arrogantly assumes Juliet will want to marry him, Paris never treats her unkindly. Nevertheless, because she does not love him, marrying Paris represents a real and frightening possibility for Juliet. Early the next morning, the Capulet house is aflutter with preparations for the wedding.

Capulet sends the Nurse to go wake Juliet. She finds Juliet dead and begins to wail, soon joined by both Lady Capulet and Capulet. When we first meet him, he believes he is in love with Rosaline, but then he meets Juliet at a party. They instantly fall in love and are married in secret the next day. The pair are separated after Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished. Juliet refuses to marry and her father threatens to disown her. As Romeo leave, Juliet has a feeling of doom, what does she see that frightens her?
