Network Rail have pledged to continue the work begun in to protect and promote environmental diversity in and around the site, creating an additional new drainage pond which will not only become a home for any great crested newts relocated from the recycling centre site but will also help protect the local area from flooding. In addition, the company is making a contribution towards the provision of the proposed March Country Park. Network Rail have tried to give the local community as much information as possible about the project and held a three-day public exhibition in July , allowing local residents to speak to the project team and comment on the proposals.
Notes to editors. Public consultation In July , more than local people attended a series of public consultation events at March Town Hall. The events were organized by Network Rail as it was keen to explain its proposals to the widest possible audience and to encourage as many people as possible to give their comments on the plans. Of the positive comments received, most highlighted to benefits to the local area that the proposals would bring.
In the last year Network Rail has met with those who submitted the most pressing concerns and discussed the proposals with them in depth. High-tech tests are used to grade the rail once it has arrived at Whitemoor, including ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle testing see the video above.
Some of it will be suitable for reuse on mainline track; other rails can be reused for sidings and areas where trains travel at slow speeds. If not crushed for aggregate, concrete sleepers might be cut in half for use on miniature railways. This directly benefits the railway in the area where it was collected.
Recycling is so important to us, not only as a company but as a country too. To be able to reuse the materials that we receive here in the ways that we do makes me feel incredibly proud to be part of the process. The team at Whitemoor work really hard to create a service that allows us to visibly clear line sides of redundant materials, making it a tidier and safer railway for the public.
Over time, ballast, the stones beneath the track, becomes worn and dirty, covered in oil and other contaminants. Our High Output Ballast Cleaner System is on the railway every night, filtering through the ballast on the track. The dirty ballast it removes is stored in its wagons and will eventually be taken to Whitemoor.
This decontaminates the ballast and is able to clean its own water. The nearest train station to Whitemoor Yard in Fenland is a 24 min walk away.
