According to one source, this had a devastating effect: when her friends and family called again and discovered that her voicemail had been cleared, they concluded that this must have been done by Milly herself and, therefore, that she must still be alive. But she was not. The interference created false hope and extra agony for those who were misled by it.
The deletion of the messages also caused difficulties for the police by confusing the picture when they had few leads to pursue. It also potentially destroyed valuable evidence. We need those messages as evidence. Anybody who destroys that evidence is seriously interfering with the course of a police investigation.
The paper made little effort to conceal the hacking from its readers. Bellfield was named as the prime suspect in Surrey Police's investigation into Milly's murder in and was eventually charged with the crime on March 30, When he was charged Bellfield was already serving three life sentences for murder and attempted murder. Manhunt began with the investigation into the murder of Amelie Delagrange. Mr Sutton says his team realised that Bellfield became more engaged during his police interviews if he was given something to look at, such as a photograph or a map. However Bellfield quickly cottoned on that officers were "sucking him in" so he began turning the documents over on the table so he didn't have to look at them.
Mr Sutton says: "The next day we printed things double-sided so when he turned it over, it was the same on the other side as well and he couldn't get rid of it. Mr Sutton - who was portrayed on screen by Martin Clunes in the ITV drama Manhunt about his work to catch Bellfield - says he "didn't have a particularly good relationship" with the killer during their interactions.
He was first introduced to Bellfield as "the boss" by a member of his investigation team, prompting the murderer to tut and swear at him. Surrey Police said the killer admitted in to abducting, raping and murdering Milly, but he later denied making the confession. Mr Sutton admits there were "certainly opportunities that were missed to intercept Bellfield earlier" but people "shouldn't underestimate him".
Immediately after the trial, he was named by Surrey Police as the prime suspect in the murder of Milly, and was convicted of killing her in July Mr Sutton believes Bellfield committed "dozens" more crimes that he will never be prosecuted for.
